Academic Enrichment Opportunities
One of my goals is to help your child find academic enrichment opportunities in areas they are excited about. Throughout the year we will have opportunities arise and I will update this page with information.
Youth and Government: This spring , as part of this class, 8th grade students will participate in the middle school conference. Y & G is a national competitive venue sponsored by the YMCA. Students will research and write bills that they would like to see become laws. This competition focuses on critical thinking, public speaking, group participation, and technical writing.
Model United Nations: There are opportunities for students in grades 6-8 to participate as pages for the high school Model UN meeting in the fall. For more information, contact Michael Franks (the high school gifted teacher).
Duke Tip- In the fall of the 7th grade year, students who scored above the 95th percentile in one or more areas of the TCAP will be invited to take the ACT as a 7th grader. Spelling Bee- SMMHS students will hold a school wide Spelling Bee in January. Students will be in a spell off by grade to see who gets to participate.
Geography Bee- SMMHS also hosts a Geography Bee in January. Students will take a written test to qualify for the bee during directed studies.
Chess Club- SMMHS students can participate in a chess club in my class on Wednesdays during Directed Studies after Labor Day.
Literary Magazine- SMMHS students have an opportunity to participate in the Literary Magazine. It is published once a year in the spring. Students may speak to their Language Arts teacher to get more information
Math League Competition: Once a month, during directed studies, students have an opportunity to participate in a math competition. Winners are announced monthly.
Technology Student Association(TSA)- One of SMMHS's best kept secrets is the Technology Student Association. Some of the most popular competitions are CO2 Cars, Bridge Building, Problem Solving, Environmental Challenge, Photography, Circuitry, ...There are hundreds of different competitions and our students, especially those who seek academic enrichment in the areas of technology and science do exceptionally well. Carson Scholarship : Dr. Ben Carson sponsors an Essay Competition for a scholarship of $1000 to be awarded to a SMMHS Student. Listen for more information about this competition which is open to all students who have a 3.75 or higher.
